|1. Can you provide any level of light transmittance ?|
Within our visible light transmittance range, we can provide a very precise multi-stage adjustment that is customized to fit your requirements.
|2. What range of transmission can you cover ?|
Tintable´s Electrochromic Lenses cover a range of visible light transmittance going from 70% to 25%. Can we do higher/lower? Yes, but that´s what we can guarantee at the moment with high stability and under mass production conditions. Once applied on an outer lens, we can reach levels that are way lower.
|3. Can the electrochromic lens be on itself / facing the outside?|
The Electrochromic Lens should be applied on an outer lens. This outer lens can have the colors and coatings you want but should be facing the outside, as it is already the case.
|4. How big can the lens be?|
The design and dimensions can be customized up to a A4 paper size. Definitely enough all types of eyewear.
|5. How flexible can the lens be?|
The lens is flexible up to a 6 base curvature, that is 87.2mm radius. However, only cylindrical shapes can be made at the moment.
|6. Some technologies seem to change color faster, I would rather use them instead then?|
- Electrohromism may not be the fastest color switching technology, but speed is not the only factor you should care about. Other aspects make this technology more practical and reliable in terms of stability, longevity, power consumption, battery life, multiple steps adjustment, optical clarity etc.
- Second, there are 3 reasons why electrochromism is definitely fast enough:
(1) It is actually fast, we are talking about a few seconds only.
(2) Our technology is made to let your eyewear adapt to different situations, different angles, and different moments. Except in an extremely limited number of circumstances, you won´t experience a sudden change in light conditions that you won´t see coming.
(3) Your eyes need a little bit of time to adapt to change. Rare are the people that feel comfortable when light changes suddenly. Same for the transmittance.
At Tintable, our purpose is to give the user the choice and the control at all times, that´s why we believe in manual control, multiple-stage adjustment, transmittance stability and long battery-life. Speed matters, but electrochromism is fast enough for most of the situations and applications you could think of.
|7. Is it true that no power is needed to maintain a certain level of coloration ?|
Yes, we call that the memory effect, or optical memory. Simply put, the material remembers its color and needs power supply only when switching from one level of darkness to another. That makes electrochromism an even lower power consumption technology than it already is.
|8. How does the EC lens react under low temperatures?|
The EC lens works perfectly fine and respond normally under low temperature. However, the material takes a few seconds more to complete its color switching than when the temperature is higher. Basically, the higher the temperature, the faster the switching time.
|9. Is it possible to automatize the color change, like photochromism, or other technology using sensors?|
Is it possible? Yes. Is it suitable? That depends on how you see it. Automatism always sounds good, until you actually experience it, two reasons:
(1) It might not always react the way you want it to. Not darkening when you would like it to, not bleaching when you desire.
(2)Everyone´s eye sensitivity is different. So even if one would feel like the obtained transmittance is perfect, another individual might disagree.
In addition, it increases the cost, making the technology even more expensive while the advantages are not so obvious. Automatism is especially interesting when devices are able to learn from us, so they can react the way we want them to. Or else, the risk for the option to become superficial is high.
|10. How many stages of adjustment can you set?|
In theory, as many as you want. In reality, having too many stages might not be the best solution as you may not see a big difference between one and another stage, resulting in possible confusion. But we even developed a stepless adjustment, allowing to stop when exactly when desired. Check this video to understand more.
|11. Can you make different colors?|
There are many electrochromic materials, each of them having different characteristics and even different colors. The ones we use offer the best performances and stability while reaching a color that is close to the one of your sunglasses. Although that is the only color we offer, there are no restrictions regarding the outer lens color, so there still is an infinity of available possibilities.
|12. How long can I use the device before I need to charge it again?|
That depends on the application. But if we take the example of 3 levels light transmittance Ski Goggles, and assuming you switch the power off after use, you´ll be able to enjoy more than 200 cycles without problem before you need to charge the device. One cycle being 4 button push (Level 1-2-3-1), you should have enough battery for several days. Furthermore, the natural lens color is equal to the highest level of light transmittance. In other words, if you happen to have no battery anymore, you will still see clearly.
|13. How long to charge the battery?|
Here too, it depends on the application. Around 2 hours from empty to full for Ski Goggles for example. Less for Sunglasses.
